Global share markets have been volatile following the imposition of tariffs by the US on its trading partners. While tariffs were expected, the market didn’t anticipate the magnitude and breadth of the tariffs announced last week. As a result, we’ve seen widespread sell-offs in markets.
In this podcast, Chief Investment Officer John Pearce discusses the current market environment and how UniSuper’s Investments team is responding.

Key points in John Pearce’s podcast:
- crises in markets aren’t new
- the magnitude and breadth of tariffs are broader than expected and probabilities of a recession have increased
- option returns have been more cushioned, the Balanced option (in which most UniSuper members are invested) hasn’t borne the full impact of the share market falls as it invests in a range of assets—demonstrating the benefits of diversification
- UniSuper’s immediate focus is on liquidity, making sure we have ample cash so that we don’t have to sell assets in falling markets
- we continue to monitor our portfolios and our exposures.
